Good for Rawtenstall.
Better for tomorrow.
Rawtenstall Market is built around brilliant independents, good local produce and people who care about what they do. Our sustainability focus is simple: remove single-use plastics wherever we can and reduce the miles travelled by the goods coming into our market. By buying closer to home, combining deliveries and choosing reusable alternatives, we will aim for the lowest possible impact - and keep working towards zero wherever it is genuinely achievable.

What matters to us
- •Cut single-use plastics. Our priority is to remove avoidable plastic bags, cups, lids, cutlery, containers, wrapping and other disposable items, replacing them with reusable, refillable, returnable or genuinely recyclable alternatives.
- •Buy closer to home. We will favour suppliers from Rawtenstall, Rossendale and the wider region, helping products travel fewer miles while keeping more money in the local economy.
- •Make every delivery count. We will encourage combined orders, shared delivery days, full loads and back-haul collections so fewer vehicles make fewer journeys to the market.
- •Challenge unnecessary packaging. We will ask suppliers to reduce transit packaging, use returnable crates and containers, and take packaging back for reuse wherever possible.
- •Waste less, reuse more. Traders will be encouraged to plan carefully, make full use of ingredients and materials, share suitable surplus and separate unavoidable waste correctly.
- •Measure what matters. We will track single-use plastics removed, local sourcing and supplier journeys reduced, sharing progress honestly as we work towards the lowest possible impact.
